Forestry
In addition to logging, the forestry industry is also responsible for sustainably maintaining the forest as a protected and recreational area. The sustainability must be taken into consideration using a wide range of factors.
The contribution that forests make to global carbon cycles is an equally vital criteria as the preservation of the forest's socioeconomic function and the significance of the forest as an ecosystem, which provides a habitat for flora and fauna as well as a substantial protective function for soil and water. A forest certification system, the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) including a PEFC indicator, was introduced, which is intended to improve the utilisation and cultivation of forest resources over national borders across the world.
Wood that is produced in PEFC-certified forests should make its way to the customer with the PEFC mark. Therefore the harvesting, trading and processing chain and retail trade must be certified in order to ensure the raw wood materials are PEFC in origin.
Forestry service companies that assume the harvesting and transport of timber as well as forest regeneration and cultivation services can become certified according to a standard (RAL) of the German quality control association of forest and agricultural cultivation (Gütegemeinschaft Wald- und Landschaftpflege e.V.). This certification includes assessing the statutory stipulations of the company, technical standards, accident prevention regulations, and the quality of work. The RAL certificate is required in several federal states for participating in calls for tenders at the state forestry level and serves as credible verification for the quality of work.
